2022 will be a case of “Armed Forces week” says Royal Navy commodore

The senior military leader in charge of the Armed Forces Day national event in Scarborough is predicting a fantastic week of activity ahead of 25 June.

Yorkshireman Commodore Phil Waterhouse is the lead planner for the Royal Navy which has responsibility for the event this year.

He admits two false starts – when the pandemic forced its cancellation in 2020 and 2021 – has been frustrating, but that it should be a case of third time lucky.

Commodore Waterhouse says Scarborough’s coastal location means he has greater scope for showing off some of the Navy’s hardware.

It’s hoped a destroyer and frigate can be moored in South Bay to complement the Army’s land-based assets and the RAF’s planned air displays including the Red Arrows.

Andy Carter spoke to Commodore Waterhouse and began by asking whether he was feeling the pressure as the Armed Forces Day national event approached.
