Armed Forces Day national event – bringing artwork to life

The build-up to the Armed Forces Day national event in Scarborough has seen a host of activities taking place in the week before.

That included children’s parades in Filey, Whitby and Scarborough which featured hundreds of pupils from local schools.

All three featured artwork created by people from across the borough as part of a community programme run by Animated Objects theatre company.

The works were designed to cover more than 100 years of military history and include recreations of army vehicles and several Royal Navy vessels.

In a nod to D-Day, there are also smaller vessels to represent the boats used in the Normandy landings.

The centrepiece – and always at the front of the parade – is the iconic Red Arrows Hawk aircraft which are ‘piloted’ by children in the pilots’ famous red jumpsuit.
